In California, three programs stand out:

The Clean Off-Road Equipment Voucher Incentive Project (CORE) is a government program that provides vouchers to eligible entities for the purchase of zero-emission off-road equipment, including electric trucks. The vouchers can cover up to 80% of the incremental cost of purchasing a zero-emission off-road vehicle compared to a traditional diesel vehicle, making it more financially feasible for companies to make the transition. CORE is currently available in several states, including California, Colorado, Illinois, and New York.
  2. Innovative Small e-Fleet (ISEF) is a pilot program that provides incentives to small businesses in California to purchase or lease electric vehicles, including trucks, and charging infrastructure. The program aims to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles and encourage more businesses to adopt sustainable transportation options. Through ISEF, eligible small businesses can receive up to $120,000 in incentives to purchase or lease electric trucks and up to $20,000 for charging infrastructure.
  3. The Carl Moyer Program provides funding to help individuals, businesses, and public agencies purchase cleaner-than-required engines, equipment, and other vehicles, including electric trucks. The program provides financial incentives to reduce the cost of replacing or retrofitting diesel engines or vehicles with cleaner and more efficient alternatives. By doing so, the program aims to improve air quality and reduce emissions from mobile sources. The program is open to eligible entities in California, and applicants can apply for funding on a first-come, first-served basis. The amount of funding available varies depending on the type of equipment and its intended use, but it can range from a few thousand to several hundred thousand dollars.

But California isn’t the only state with programs to help with transitioning to electric vehicles. Some of the many others include:

  1. Truck Voucher Incentive Program (TVIP) is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and provides vouchers to fleets that purchase or lease electric trucks, including Class 3-8 battery-electric trucks and Class 3-8 hydrogen fuel cell-electric trucks. The vouchers are used to offset the incremental cost of purchasing an electric truck over an equivalent diesel or gasoline-powered vehicle.
  2. MOR-EV is a program in Massachusetts that offers rebates to individuals and businesses who purchase or lease electric vehicles, including electric trucks. The rebate amount varies depending on the type of electric vehicle and its battery capacity. The MOR-EV program is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and administered by the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE).
  3. The Multi-State Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Action Plan is a collaborative effort between 15 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the Governor’s Highway Safety Association.
